Endorsement books, 1862-1887.

Endorsement books contain abstracts or copies of Adjutant General's correspondence usually concerning commission and service records. Each request for record verification or correction is summarized (including name, address, correspondent rank, and letter date) and accompanied by reply summaries. Additional letters written by the Adjutant General to others (e.g., War Dept. officials; commanding officers; soldiers) request further information for case verification, referred to as an "endorsement."
